UK congestion "unacceptable"

Date: 29 July 2008

New road statistics have highlighted an "unacceptable" level of congestion, it has been reported.

According to Department for Transport (DfT) statistics 28 per cent of speeds travelled at in rush hour traffic during 2007 were less than 15 miles per hour, which the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) deems to be unacceptable.

Commenting on the Road Statistics 2007: Traffic, Speeds and Congestion report, the BCC's head of policy Chris Hannant said: "Whilst the Government has made some short term commitments to help ease the gridlock, far more long term, innovative and ambitious thinking is needed."

Such high levels of congestion could slow down couriers making deliveries during peak traveling hours, with the research also showing that light van traffic is growing faster than ordinary vehicle traffic at 4.6 per cent in the past year.

In related news, the ten councils in Greater Manchester are holding a public referendum on the proposed congestion charge.

According to Manchester.com, it is expected this will take place in December.
