Experts warns of satnav dangers

Date: 24 July 2008

An expert has urged people to consider the extent to which they rely on their satnav systems, after research highlighted that thousands of road users blame the devices for accidents.

Katie Shepard, a spokesperson for the road safety charity Brake, has called for harsher sentencing for people who cause accidents by relying on such gadgets.

"Anyone buying a satnav must consider whether they can be safe on the road,” she told online news resource Only Finance.

The news provider adds that people, including couriers, who cause damage to their vans due to over-reliance on satnavs may find their insurance will not pay out.

Over the past week, two separate studies have highlighted the dangers of satnavs, with Direct Line's research showing people blame the devices for 300,000 accidents.

A study by NFU Mutual highlighted that a third of satnav users in the south will blindly following instructions from their gadget even if it takes them down unsuitable roads.
