Survey reveals UK's bumpiest roads

Date: 22 July 2008

The roads couriers may want to avoid when going about their job have been revealed in Continental Tyres' list of the UK's bumpiest roads.

In first place was Station Road in Scholes near Leeds, which was described by respondents to the survey as like a "giant crater" and "dangerous to cyclists and motorists".

Second place was occupied by Castle Street near Paisley in Scotland, which is covered in deep potholes, according to a Daily Express report.

Other roads ranking in the top ten were Mill Avenue in Hillingdon, London and Waldegrave Road in the capital's Richmond region taking the third and fourth spots.

Commenting on these findings , Continental Tyres technical expert Roger Sanders said: "Road conditions have a huge effect on the performance and safety of tyres. Impact with pothole edges or sunken grates can cause severe tyre damage which could lead to blow-outs."

He advised motorists, including couriers to drive slowly and carefully on roads which are in bad condition.

Meanwhile, transport minister Ruth Kelly has launched a £6 billion investment package to improve the UK's motorways and other main roads.
