Satnav proves third best in directions challenge

Date: 11 July 2008

The results of a recent navigation challenge suggest that drivers, including courier, may be better off relying on a map rather than a satnav system.

According to report in the Scotsman, a challenge organised by Reader's Digest highlighted that satnavs often send people on the wrong route.

During the course of the challenge, participants were expected to travel 989 miles and find their way to 12 specified locations.

The car guided by a satnav system finished one and a half hours after that guided by a map and three hours after the vehicle which found the spots by asking for directions.

Speaking to the news provider about the research, Sarah Sands, the editor-in-chief of Reader's Digest, said: "It goes to show that when you're trying to find remote locations in the Lake District or navigate busy city centres, you're better off relying on the people who live there, rather than a line on a piece of paper or a computer."

Meanwhile, for couriers who cannot cope without their satnavs, Navman has released its 3D system which displays notable landmarks in three dimensions.
