Car tax changes 'could see costs soar'
Date: 07 July 2008
Proposed changes to car tax could see motorists', including couriers', costs rapidly increasing, it has emerged.
The Western Mail reports that chancellor Alistair Darling has suggested revamping the way in which car tax is decided, with new tax bands reflecting vehicles' emissions levels.
It states that if these changes were implemented some cars will see their tax fall, but many will experience increases over the coming years.
According to the publication, the RAC Foundation wants the Treasury to conduct a review of its vehicle taxation, which takes into account the high amounts people are currently spending on fuel.
The foundation's director Stephen Glaister told the newspaper that the changes could see an extra £2 billion being taken from vehicle users in the next three years.
In related news, research from Insurance.co.uk recently highlighted that the rising cost of fuel is affecting motorists, including those providing a courier service.
The study revealed 51 per cent of motorists plan to cut the amount they spend on MOTs, servicing and car parts, while a third are considering opting for a more energy-efficient car.
