Van drivers 'UK's safe motorists'

Date: 03 July 2008

Van drivers are the safest motorists on UK roads, according to recent research.

A study conducted by Tesco Van Insurance highlighted that van drivers, including those providing courier services, make fewer and smaller insurance claims than other vehicle users.

The research also revealed that one in five van drivers have undertaken an advanced driving course or specialist training.

A poll conducted by the supermarket revealed other drivers no longer perceive van drivers to be the worst motorists, deeming taxi drivers to be the most dangerous behind the wheel.

Commenting on the findings, Allan Burns of Tesco Van Insurance said: "Van drivers are often stereotyped as rogues of the road, however, our own records show that van drivers are actually very safe drivers and in our eyes they deserve a good insurance rate."

This follows news from Vans United citing company car drivers as the most dangerous motorists due to a survey which highlighted they are three-times more likely to eat, drink or use a mobile behind the wheel than the average driver.

Van drivers, such as couriers, were found to be seven-times less likely to be involved in a motorway accident than car users.
