Couriers could benefit from satnav which highlights congestion
Date: 02 July 2008
A new satnav device which alerts drivers as they approach traffic jams could prove useful for people undertaking courier work.
According to a West Sussex County Times report, the Congestion Avoidance Dynamic Routing Engine, which is being developed at Portsmouth University, will share information with other satnav systems to create a picture of how busy certain areas are.
This information will then be relayed to drivers along with details of how to avoid the most congested roads.
David Brown, head of the institute, told the publication: "The system interprets live data from current traffic conditions so the motorist receives up-to-the-minute advice and can make an informed choice.
"It's designed to take the pain out of that agonising decision about whether to try an alternative route which could be equally congested."
According to the newspaper, the system could be available for purchase in the next 18 months.
This follows news from the Times that EuroRAP is in talks with satnav manufacturers about using its risk map to develop a satnav system which warns drivers when they are approaching dangerous roads.
