New generation of speed cameras 'on the way'
Date: 30 June 2008
A new generation of speed cameras known as the "yellow vultures" are to be introduced in Scotland later this year, which could affect couriers working in the area.
The Times reports that the cameras, which have been trialled on the road between Glasgow and Stranraer, work by calculating the time taken to travel between two points and work out the driver's average speed.
It notes that these cameras have cut accidents by 20 per cent since the trials began three years ago.
However, the publication notes that one potential flaw of the safety devices could be that they can only record cars or vans travelling in one lane so speeding motorists could continually switch lanes to avoid being caught.
In the future, the cameras will be improved to monitor all three lanes of the motorway simultaneously.
Meanwhile, it was recently reported that some 1,200 motorists have been caught speeding in an area of Lancashire over a three-week period.
The Burnley and Pendle Citizen reports that this has seen drivers fined £72,000, seven times the average Lancashire speed camera's revenue for a year.
You too can make the headlines with bigger and better courier contracts, find out how!
