'Lack of support' for Manchester congestion charge

Date: 19 June 2008

Less than a third of people living in the Greater Manchester area support the plans to introduce a congestion charge, it has emerged.

According to a BBC report, an independent poll highlighted that 62 per cent of people are against the charge, which could affect couriers working in the area, while 86 per cent of those questioned wanted a referendum.

The news provider quotes one respondent as saying: "It is a big decision on an important issue for the city and everyone should have a say."

Plans to make Manchester the second UK city with a congestion charge were approved by the government last week.

If it is implemented, the charge will see vehicle users, including those providing courier services, charged for entering the city centre between 07:00 BST and 09:30 BST and 16:00 BST and 18:30 BST on weekdays.

They would be charged £5 per day and the scheme would begin in 2013.

In related news, the Bristol Evening Post reported that the city has been earmarked as a possible location for a congestion scheme due to the large number of vehicles on its road during peak hours.
