Under-inflated tyres 'cost motorists £1bn'
Date: 18 June 2008
At a time when the cost of running a car or van is increasing, motorists, including couriers, could save themselves money by monitoring their tyre pressure, according to one expert.
Cooper Tire Europe asserts that some 95 per cent of vehicles have at least one tyre under-inflated by ten per cent or more, which increases fuel consumption and costs UK motorists £1 billon annually.
The company adds that under-inflated tires can cause accidents as they increase the stopping distance of vehicles.
It claims that Department for Transport data reveals that defective and under-inflated tyres cause 1,000 serious injuries or fatalities every year.
"Checking your tyre pressures is a mundane but very simple, task," says Cooper Tire product manager, Malcolm Jones.
"As the credit crunch grips the country, it's amazing that drivers aren't bothering to do it, as it could save them money and, more importantly, keep them safe on the road."
Meanwhile, recent research by Vans United asserted that van drivers, including those providing courier services, were found to be seven times less likely to be involved in accidents on motorways compared to car drivers.
