Road planning 'must start now'
Date: 17 June 2008
A long-term plan regarding the UK's road infrastructure is necessary to ensure that it is able to deal with expected increases in traffic, according to the director of the RAC Foundation.
Stephen Glaister told the Road Network management conference in London this week that the number of cars on UK roads will have increased by 44 per cent by 2041, which could affect couriers conducting work in the nation, reports Motors Today.
It is thought that to accommodate this number of road users, additional capacity will have to be created by widening existing roads and building new ones.
Mr Glaister also suggested that road user pricing will have to be reformed to improve efficiency; a policy which he claims must begin now to be effective, adds the news provider.
"Roads are essential to the UK economy and our way of life," said Mr Glaister. "It is therefore essential that our future road requirements are understood, embraced and planned for."
In related news, Manchester is campaigning to become the second UK city to implement a congestion charge, while the Bristol Evening Post suggests Bristol is considering introducing one within the next six years.
