New headset could keep couriers alert behind the wheel

Date: 28 May 2008

A new driving alarm designed to prevent people falling asleep behind the wheel could help drivers providing a courier service stay alert on the job.

Techradr.com reports that the Anti Sleep Driving Alarm headwear reacts if the driver's head droops below a 30 degree angle, emitting a high-pitched alarm to wake them up.

It recommends the light-weight product to drivers who regularly travel long distances or take part in shift work, making them ideal for couriers.

As the alarm is small it can be disguised as a bluetooth headset.

However, the site adds that there is no substitute for a good night's sleep before getting behind the wheel.

According to the Road Safety Authority up to 20 per cent of crashes are caused by driver fatigue.

Couriers tuning in to music to keep themselves alert while at work may find themselves listening to the Killers' Mr Brightside, Bonnie Tyler's Holding out for a Hero or Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild, all of which took a spot on the top three songs for motorists, according to an Elephant.co.uk poll.
