New speed camera catches out mobile phone users

Date: 22 May 2008

A new type of speed camera is on the look-out for drivers, including those undertaking courier work, who are using their mobile phones behind the wheel.

The cameras are being fitted in the north Lincolnshire region by the area's road safety partnership to try and combat the problem of drivers who illegally use their mobiles.

This is Scunthorpe reports that since the beginning of this year the region's police force has issued some 99 fixed penalty notices for the offence.

Speaking to the news provider, PC Barry Gardner, casualty reduction officer with the force, said that road users would not be notified when the speed cameras were in operation.

"When the cameras are monitoring speed there is a list of where they will be and when - this time, this will not be the case," he said.

"If we did, people might be tempted to use their phones in areas where they thought they were safe from us, and there could be more accidents."

This follows news that a new system from Transport for London can be downloaded onto drivers' satnavs and alert them to the speed limit in particular regions so that they are at less risk of breaking the law.
