Courier drivers should get regular eye tests
Date: 19 May 2008
Courier drivers are being warned that their eyes may need testing, after it emerged that one-in-three London drivers failed a vision screening.
Research conducted by Specsavers as part of the Drive Safe roadshow at Olympia, showed that more than a third of people regularly using the capital's roads have eye sight which does not meet the minimum legal standard set by the Department for Transport.
The survey, which involved some 500 users, also highlighted that 92 per cent of respondents feel regular eye checks should be compulsory every three years.
Specsavers founder Dame Mary Perkins said: "It has long been suspected that defective eye sight is a significant contributory factor in road traffic accidents
"These results show that a significant number of London's drivers are worryingly unsafe."
It was previously reported that people working as drivers, including those providing courier services, should ensure that they are getting enough sleep as research noted that more than 30 per cent of people are sleep deprived.
