Many van drivers not aware of speed limits

Date: 23 April 2008

Many van drivers in the UK are not aware of the speed limits that apply to them.

A study by Vauxhall Commercial Vehicles found that 85 per cent of drivers don't know the correct speed limits when they are driving a van.

However, the survey also found that people who use vans as an essential part of their business - courier drivers for example - are fully clued up, but other people who only drive vans occasionally are often not.

Vans with a gross weight of less than 2,000 kilograms can stick to the same speed limits as cars - eg, 70mph on motorways.

However, those vans that don't exceed 7.5 tonnes but that are over 2,000 kilograms are subject to lower speed limits.

The correct speed limit for larger vans on single carriageways is 50mph, but many people believed it was 60mph, and some thought it was 40mph.

On dual carriageways, the limit is 60mph, but many thought it was the same as for cars at 70mph.
