Fewer drivers snapped by speed cameras in Scotland
Date: 11 April 2008
Fewer drivers, such as courier drivers, are being caught by speed cameras in Scotland, according to the Scottish Daily Record.
In some areas the figure has dropped by a fifth - evidence that people are adhering more to the local speed limits and that courier firms may not be having to shell out so much in fines.
In the Highlands, the number of fines fell by 20 per cent to 4,695, in Strathclyde they fell by 17 per cent to 26,288, and in Fife they dropped by 15 per cent to 5,323.
Across Scotland as a whole, there were 114,107 fines issued - which indicates that nevertheless many courier drivers could still be getting caught around the country.
"There has been a fall in speeding fines detected by cameras because of better adherence to the speed limits," said Jim Dale of the Scottish Safety Camera Programme.
"Cameras established under the programme are sited at locations where there is a history of fatal and serious accidents."
Meanwhile, the Association of British Drivers has suggested the fall in speeding fines is down to motorists being more aware of where cameras are located.
