Police warn van drivers to beware of crime spate

Date: 07 April 2008

Police in Newmarket, Suffolk, are warning van drivers, such as couriers, to beware of criminals at large in the area.

Over the last three weeks, some 14 vans have been broken into and equipment worth around £10,000 has been stolen, the Newmarket Journal reports.

Items including tools, a satellite navigation system, and even a DVD player have been taken during the spate of attacks.

Detective inspector John Brocklebank of Suffolk Police said that van drivers (including couriers) could take various steps to ensure the safety of their vehicles and contents.

"I would urge any workmen to remove their tools from their vehicle when they return home," he warned.

"Any items of value left inside will be tempting to thieves, who can easily take hundreds if not thousands of pounds worth of tools in one go.

"Always keep your vehicle secure at all times and if you don't have access to a garage, park in a busy, well-lit area."

Other steps that couriers and owner drivers in the area could take include marking items with an ultra-violet pen, which would make any stolen items easier to trace.
