RAC: Hidden cameras 'not best way to keep speed down'
Date: 31 March 2008
Concealing speed cameras is not the best way of keeping speeds down among couriers and other motorists, according to the RAC.
A spokesman for the motorists' group told the Welsh Daily Post: "The general idea behind a speed camera is that it should be a visible reminder of what road statistics say is a hot spot.
"By concealing them it seems you are missing the point a little bit. You should have them post signage as a way of saying you need to slow down on this particular stretch of road.
"If you conceal a speed camera, why are you concealing it?"
He added that there were better ways of reducing speed than hiding speed cameras, which arguably unnecessarily hinder couriers and owner drivers.
Separately, new data from the government indicates that a huge £104 million was raised by 38 speed camera partnerships in England and Wales over the 2006 to 2007 period.

Proof that speed cameras do not and have never worked. Casualtys are up, convictions are down. The only way to bulk up the stats is to hide the damn things and hope they claw back some of the money wasted on such obviously flawed technology.

Speed cameras are the most productive revenue machines the Government has. They do not improve road safety but bring in cash by the millions. The Police Forces in the UK should be ashamed if they think hiding cameras is road safety its all about money not lives pure and simple.
