Speed cameras affecting couriers and owner drivers
Date: 25 March 2008
The large number of speed camera fines affecting couriers and owner drivers in the UK has been revealed.
According to new figures from the Department for Transport, a whopping £104 million was raised by 38 safety camera partnerships in England and Wales over the 2006-2007 period.
Many couriers and other motorists believe that some speed cameras are there simply to raise revenue for local councils, and don't really have an effect on road safety. They can often hinder owner drivers from operating at maximum efficiency.
And it was couriers in the capital that suffered most from these speed camera fines, with motorists in London having to fork out a huge £7.5 million in levies.
In mid- and south Wales, drivers paid £5.9 million and in the Thames Valley they coughed up £4.5 million.
A government spokeswoman said that "safety cameras are there to save lives", but a campaigner from speedcameras.org told What Car?: "Drivers without a licence, insurance or tax are four to five times more likely to be involved in an accident - they should be the top priority for the police."
