Running hard shoulder speed limit increased
Date: 20 March 2008
The Highways Agency has moved to increase the speed limit on the running hard shoulder of the M42, which will ease congestion for couriers and other motorists.
The hard shoulder running scheme means that owner operators and others can use the hard shoulder as a regular driving lane during peak hours when congestion is at its worst.
Increasing the speed limit from 50mph to 60mph indicates that the scheme is proving successful.
Gary Amos of Green Flag said: "We believe that the use of the hard shoulder as a running lane goes some way to ease congestion on this busy stretch of motorway.
"However, this is a short-term solution rather than the answer to improving overcrowded roads and it does have some road safety implications."
He added that couriers and other motorists using the M42 have to be aware of the rules. The maximum speed has only been increased to 60mph between junctions 4 and 3A of the motorway, for a two-and-a-half mile stretch.
