Road pricing 'often does little to improve congestion' for couriers and others

Date: 10 March 2008

Pay-as-you-go driving is just an inconvenience for couriers and other motorists, and often does little to fight congestion on the roads.

The Association of British Drivers (ABD) has found that "London's experience of road pricing has suggested that journey time gains have been minimal, and all that has really happened is that drivers have been charged for the privilege of driving in congestion".

ABD spokesman Nigel Humphries said: "This backs ABD's argument that, instead of spending millions on trying to promote its lost cause [of road pricing], the government should instead invest the money in road improvements to alleviate known bottlenecks."

Couriers and owner drivers in London must pay a daily congestion charge to enter the capital, piling financial pressure on them.

The government has said that a national road pricing scheme for couriers and others will not be introduced in the short-term.

However, the ABD points out that a toll system on the M6 shows that pricing makes road use less efficient. The toll road is practically empty and "struggling to pay its way," the group said.
