White van men have sporty hobbies
Date: 26 February 2008
Van drivers, such as couriers and owner drivers, usually play football, go fishing, or go to motor sport events at the weekend.
That's according to a study into the phenomenon of the 'white van man' (WVM) by the Social Issues Research Centre (SIRC).
"WVM is an active chap and his various interests and hobbies provide a contrast with his often rather routine working week," the centre claims.
And it is a good thing that the typical van courier driver is quite active, because if the SIRC is right his diet is not exactly one that would thrill TV nutritionist Gillian McKeith.
"His breakfast, when he has that luxury, would be described as a 'heart attack on a plate' - the tempting, high-cholesterol combination that only a genuine British 'greasy spoon' can deliver properly".
Courier vans will also typically include a Coke can holder - essential when they make those snack stops at the petrol station.
In terms of holidays, WVM will mostly go to the beach in Greece, Cyprus, Spain, Malta or Lanzarote, or on a caravan holiday in the West Country.
