Qualification aimed at couriers and other white van drivers
Date: 15 February 2008
A new qualification aimed at professional van drivers such as couriers has been established, Motor Transport reports.
The Level 2 NVQ, Carry and Deliver Goods, will begin in March, organised by Education Development International (EDI).
It will focus on skills that are invaluable for couriers and owner drivers, such as driving and logistics skills, and customer service. It is suitable for anyone who delivers loads to customers.
A spokesman for EDI said: "With many delivery drivers suffering from a negative public perception, the introduction of EDI's Level 2 NVQ will enhance their skills and offer a formal, accredited qualification to support them in their role and help them to develop a career path within logistics."
Separately, the Samaritans charity is running a scheme in Swindon to help to soften the image of the white van man.
Couriers and owner drivers are invited to put stickers on the side of their vans, raising awareness of the charity.
