Couriers to be hit by £25 congestion charge

Date: 13 February 2008

Many couriers and owner drivers are likely to be hit by the increased congestion charge.

London Mayor Ken Livingstone said yesterday (February 12th) that drivers of the most polluting vehicles would have to pay £25 to enter central London from October 27th.

He said: "The CO2 emissions from the most high-powered 4x4s and sports cars can be up to four times as great as the least polluting cars."

Trucks will continue to pay the £8 per day charge, but courier drivers with vans that emit more than 226g/km of CO2 will be hit with a £25 charge.

This will greatly affect courier drivers in the capital, who are already struggling with higher fuel bills, although lorries and heavier vans will get a reduced £6 charge if they meet Euro 5 emissions standards.

The AA has criticised the change, saying it will penalise small businesses such as courier companies which need to use vans to get around London.
