Increasing traffic congestion 'will seriously harm couriers' operations'
Date: 18 January 2008
The latest government figures show that increasing traffic problems will cause serious delays for couriers and other owner drivers.
According to the Freight Transport Association (FTA), the most recent figures confirm its own estimates which suggested that "unacceptable congestion" will develop in the coming years and increase delivery times for couriers and owner drivers.
The FTA warned that increasing congestion would result in higher costs and a loss of journey time reliability for the country's couriers and owner drivers.
To improve the situation for couriers and all other road uses, the FTA urged the government to take urgent steps to provide more capacity on roads through improved traffic management schemes and by widening motorways.
"[The] FTA's concern is that growth in car traffic on the key trade routes will severely inhibit supply chain efficiency, increasing costs and reducing service levels," explained the organisation's director of external affairs, Geoff Dossetter.
"The supply chain delivers almost everything we use or consume every day and the roads network is a fundamental ingredient in making those deliveries work, to the benefit of the whole population."
