Norwich considers letting couriers use bus lanes
Date: 08 January 2008
Officials in Norwich are trying to encourage more couriers and other owner drivers to use a recently opened freight transhipment (FTC) centre by relaxing road restrictions in the area.
According to roadtransport.com, Norfolk County Council is considering a plan to allow couriers and owner drivers to use the city's bus and cycle lanes in order to speed up deliveries.
It is hoped that the plan will encourage these couriers and owner drivers to use the FTC, which was opened last August.
Graham Mayes, business development manager at the FTC, said that it had so far been difficult to convince companies to use the facility.
"Commercial interest has been exceedingly low," he told the website. "I've talked to the council on a number of occasions currently there's no stick to force customers to join the scheme and no carrot to incentivise them to join."
If the plan was adopted, couriers and other owner driver could use the bus and cycle lanes on the A11 in Norwich to facilitate deliveries.
