Owner drivers advised on windscreens
Date: 02 January 2008
Owner drivers could find themselves unable to carry out courier work this winter if they make the common mistake of using hot water to de-ice windscreens.
According to research from car care firm Comma, 30 per cent of motorists aged between 19 and 21 use hot water on their screens.
This means that 300,000 drivers, including UK couriers, are risking cracking their windscreens.
"In cold weather, everyone needs to take a bit of time to clear the window," said Mike Bewsey from Comma.
"A scraper should be an essential item in the car, along with a bit of de-icer for when the ice is really stubborn."
Some 71 per cent of motorists in their 50s claim to use a scraper to clear ice and just nine per cent resort to hot water.
A large proportion of the UK is facing snow and ice over the next couple of days, as the Met Office predicts freezing temperatures for the end of the week.
