Manchester C-charge suffers blow
Date: 13 December 2007
In news that will have Manchester courier companies and owner drivers (who transport loads, including backloads, around town) jumping for joy, plans for a local congestion charge have suffered a blow.
At a meeting on Wednesday (December 12th), Bury council called for a citywide referendum on congestion charging - a scheme that would mean that owner drivers and courier companies carrying loads would have to pay to enter the city, Manchester Evening News reports.
A motion was passed stating that Bury would be against the Transport Innovation Fund bid if the courier company-penalising charge were included.
In fact, only seven of Greater Manchester's ten local authorities are in favour of the road pricing scheme, perhaps because they know how detrimental it will be for couriers and owner operators with loads such as backloads, trying to get through town.
The charge could be up to £5 per day, meaning that transporting return loads and backloads would be more expensive for courier firms and owner drivers.
