Couriers 'still face' kerbside restrictions
Date: 04 December 2007
Couriers delivering loads to recipients in London will welcome recent changes to loading limits, although it's not all good news for drivers.
The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has highlighted areas that could still cause difficulties for couriers, not to mention cost them money.
Although London Councils agreed back in June to raise the kerbside loading limit from 20 minutes to 40 minutes, many couriers will find that in some areas they can't deliver loads early in the morning.
That's because some boroughs have plans to remove unlimited kerbside access before 11am - so any loads that take longer could see couriers fined.
FTA regional policy manager for London Natalie Chapman said that there is not evidence to support further pre-11am restrictions.
"We welcome the approaches of Westminster City Council and the London Borough of Camden, which are both planning to move to 40 minutes after 11am and to allow loading and unloading for 'as long as necessary' before 11am and after 6.30pm," she added.
The 33 London councils intend to introduce changes to kerbside restrictions at different times and the FTA has raised concerns that this will leave couriers confused and vulnerable to fines.
"In the long-run, this will increase delivery costs and will result in higher prices for consumers," Ms Chapman warned.
