Van drivers asked to sign safety pledgePopular

Date: 03 December 2007

A transport recruitment company in Accrington is asking its van drivers to sign a pledge designed to make the roads in East Lancashire safer, the Lancashire Telegraph reports.

Workers at Driver Hire will commit to sticking to the speed limit and making sure they are in good physical condition before driving. Courier drivers are encouraged to sign similar pledges.

The company sent out pledges with pay slips.

"We are hoping for a 100 per cent return rate," said Driver Hire's Iain Westman. "Every day, on UK roads, 11 children are killed or seriously injured, 80 per cent of whom are on foot."

Of course, couriers and owner drivers often drive near schools and should take extra care to obey the traffic laws to protect the safety of children.

"This is a tremendous idea and is something that more and more companies are subscribing to," said a spokesman for the Road Haulage Association.

"The image of the haulage industry is not that marvellous with the general public. If there is an accident it is easy to make an HGV a target for blame. Schemes like this alter that perception and raise awareness of how seriously drivers take safety on the roads."
