Royal Mail dispute at an end

Date: 30 November 2007

The industrial dispute at Royal Mail, which has benefited many courier firms, appears to finally be at an end.

Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) voted 64 per cent in favour of the Royal Mail pay and modernisation agreement.

This means that members will receive a pay rise of 6.9 per cent over two years, and a lump sum of £175 to cover the period from April to October.

Multiple strikes at Royal Mail had left many businesses in the lurch, as they were not able to guarantee that cheques would arrive on time. Many turned to courier companies to make deliveries instead.

The agreement demonstrates that the union is leading the change agenda at Royal Mail, which was vitally needed.

"The CWU has always recognised that change is needed in the Royal Mail and this agreement demonstrates that the union is leading the change agenda," said CWU secretary general Dave Ward.
