Norwich demands debate on congestion charges

Date: 29 November 2007

Currently, Norfolk County Council is in the middle of a feasibility study into whether a congestion charge should be introduced for couriers and others entering the city.

However, a report in the local Norwich Evening News suggests that city officials are worried that they will not be properly consulted over the scheme.

A local councillor, Judith Lubbock, told the paper: "City councillors have been completely sidelined. County councillors from Loddon and Harleston have been deciding what is best for Norwich.

"This situation epitomises the need for a unitary council. It's therefore essential that we address this democratic deficiency and demand that the county council share the information and let us have our say."

The city's officials have laid out a series of tests which would determine what impact the congestion charging would have on local courier firms and other businesses.

Another part of the plan that is likely to anger couriers is a suggestion that a 20mph speed limit should be enforced in the city.

Recently, electronic engineer Dave Finney told the Bucks Free Press that couriers up and down the country were being unnecessarily slowed down by inappropriate speed limits and cameras.
