Couriers slowed down by 'unnecessary' speed cameras

Date: 27 November 2007

It appears that courier drivers are being unnecessarily slowed down in their day-to-day business by speed cameras that don't work.

According to electronic engineer Dave Finney, speed cameras in Buckinghamshire have made no difference to the number of serious or fatal accidents over the past five years.

He told the Bucks Free Press: "In other words, there's been no improvement whatsoever."

Many couriers and owner drivers are angry that they have to slow down to speeds in some areas that are unreasonable, in places where it would be perfectly safe to drive a little faster.

Mr Finney collected his data from the Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership website, although an operations manager from the group criticised the way he had worked out the figures.

Meanwhile, cameras that can capture courier drivers who run red lights have come online in Belfast.

They are highly visible and located at five places around the city. Courier drivers caught by them can expect a fine and penalty points.
