Yorkshire police issue speed warning for couriers

Date: 13 November 2007

Police in north Yorkshire have warned van drivers, such as couriers, to be careful not to drive too fast.

The Road Policing Group officers are concerned that a lot of van drivers - possibly many couriers among them - who did not realise they were speeding when they were pulled over, the Bradford Telegraph & Argus reports.

Sergeant Daniel Spence said: "While carrying out speed enforcement, many drivers of vans claim they are totally unaware of the speeds that they are allowed to travel at on certain categories of roads.

"For example, a goods vehicle not exceeding 7.5 tonnes such as a Ford Transit or a Mercedes Sprinter, cannot by law exceed 50mph on a single carriageway, 60mph on a dual carriageway and 70mph on a motorway."

He then issued this warning to courier drivers and others: "However, we have found that a great many van drivers wrongly presume the speed limits for a van are the same as for a car. This simply is not a plausible excuse."
