A road safety group has attacked speed cameras, which have brought misery to many courier drivers.

Paul Smith of Safe Speed pointed to figures from the Department for Transport that showed that 96 per cent of rural road injury crashes last year did not involve exceeding a speed limit.

This suggests that speed cameras are a costly red herring that slow down drivers of courier companies and owner drivers when they are going about their business.

In fact, of the four per cent that might include speeding as a factor in the crash, two per cent were rated as 'possibly' including speeding.

"These figures make an absolute mockery of the speed camera programme," said Mr Smith. "We have long known that it had failed to save lives and this is why - we never had a 'speeding problem' in the first place."

Courier drivers with loads to deliver to strict deadlines are likely to agree with Mr Smith's comments.

"The Department for Transport has spent over ten years barking up the wrong tree," he continued.

"Will they now admit that they must address the true causes of rural road crashes? If we want safer roads, we must address the 'human factors' that cause well over 90 per cent of road crashes."
