Environmental concerns are becoming increasingly important within the haulage industry, as shown at the European Road Transport Show in Amsterdam last week.

Companies showing environmentally friendly vehicles included Modec, with its zero-emissions light commercial vehicles; FedEx, which announced plans to use ten hybrid electric/diesel courier-type vans in its European fleet; and Daf, with its Enhanced Environmental Vehicles (EEVs).

Stewart Hunt, Daf's UK chief executive, told Motor Transport: "Just two years ago, very few hauliers were concerning themselves with their carbon footprints.

"It's clear that the environment will be central to political and public life for decades to come, and you can be certain that the restrictions and challenges facing us now are only the beginning of a long, hard and complicated road."

The company predicts that eco-friendly vehicles are likely to be especially popular with local councils, who often have an obligation to set a good example.

Courier and freight haulage companies operating in London are having to get ready for the London low emissions zone (LEZ), which comes into effect from next February.

Courier vans weighing between 1.205 and 3.5 tonnes (unladen) will be affected from October 4th, 2010. The emissions standard will be Euro III for particulate matter.
