In news that will be welcomed by courier firms, Royal Mail has cut its Sunday post collections.

The series of strikes that have plagued Royal Mail this year have had positive knock-on effects for courier companies, as they pick up disgruntled Royal Mail customers.

Now the posties will no longer pick up post on the Sabbath as it looks to improve efficiency and cut costs in the face of fierce competition.

A spokesman told the Press Association: "Demand for a Sunday collection service is very limited. It used to cost Royal Mail four times as much to handle as letters posted on other days of the week.

"The Royal Mail operates in a fully competitive market and we have to reduce our costs to improve efficiency and enable us to compete successfully with our rivals."

During the recent Royal Mail strikes, the British Chamber of Commerce (BCC) urged courier companies to make the most of the chaos.

"Our advice to courier firms is to get out there, because you're knocking on open doors," a BCC spokesman said.
