The Royal Mail postal strike is likely to lead to more and more small firms looking to alternative methods of sending post, such as couriers.

This is the view of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), which conducted a survey over the weekend finding that 55 per cent of small businesses are more likely to use private delivery firms, even after the current dispute has been resolved.

Figures from the study show that a massive 88 per cent have seen a "significant" impact on their business because of the mail strike, which came about because of a dispute over pay and modernisation plans at Royal Mail.

Problems faced include cash flow issues, a loss of sales, and less investment because of meeting the costs of the strike.

In fact, 62 per cent of small firms have been sending invoices through alternatives such as couriers during the strike.

"This result really hammers home the damage that this dispute has done to Royal Mail," said BCC head of policy Natalie Evans.

"Small businesses rely on a decent post service and have been let down badly over the past few weeks. It will not be easy for Royal Mail to regain their confidence."
