A new EU law will improve road safety across the continent for couriers and freight haulage drivers.

The EU Council of Ministers has agreed in principle to harmonise safety systems for major roads used by freight haulage firms and couriers across the European Union, RoadTransport.com reports.

The legislation is designed to make sure that safety is considered at all levels.

According to the council, the rules are "aimed at ensuring that safety is integrated into all phases of planning, design and operation of the road infrastructure" across the trans-European network (TEN), the group of roads that are commonly used by international freight haulage vehicles.

Parts of the M20, M2, M3, M4 and A5 are among those included in the UK, although there are many others too.

It is believed that the measures could prevent around 600 deaths on the roads each year, along with 7,000 injuries - good news for couriers and other logistics drivers in Britain and abroad.
