The Royal Mail strike action that is affecting courier firms in the UK shows no sign of abating.

Talks between the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Royal Mail, designed to reach a settlement, have broken down.

"That process has now come to an end without an agreement," the CWU said in a statement. "Real progress has been made in many areas, but there is agreement in none."

He said the offer includes a pay increase of 6.9 per cent over two years but this is subject to linking "unacceptable strings" including a reduction in pensions benefits. Other flexibility proposals are not to the CWU's liking.

"The union has already announced more strikes and these will continue," the union said. "In the strikes over the last three days support among CWU's 130,000 members has been overwhelming."

A spokesman for the British Chamber of Commerce told the BBC that courier companies should make the most of the Royal Mail chaos.

"Our advice to courier firms is to get out there, because you're knocking on open doors," he said.
