Courier companies in the UK could benefit from strike action at Royal Mail threatened by a second union.

Last week the Communication Workers Union (CWU) said that its Royal Mail members may take industrial action in October in response to "draconian" proposals on pay and business changes.

Now Unite, which represents 12,000 managers, has warned that it may ballot its members on a possible strike because Royal Mail is threatening to close its pension scheme to current members and to raise the retirement age.

"We call upon Royal Mail to honour its commitment to preserve the past service benefits that have been built up and paid for by our members," said Unite's Paul Reuter.

"Failure by Royal Mail to respond positively will leave Unite with no option other than to ballot its members for strike action."

Strikes by CWU postal workers at Royal Mail earlier this year brought a lot of extra business to courier companies as businesspeople looked for alternative delivery methods. Citipost and TNT were among the firms that benefited.
