Protest group calls for action on UK fuel taxPopular

The Transaction protest group is calling on couriers and freight haulage drivers to help persuade the government to lower fuel taxation.

The group was first created in 2000, when fuel prices were at a then record high of 80 pence per litre. Now that prices are at around 95 pence per litre, and pressures on logistics companies have grown worse, the group has announced its return.

Their website features a forum where drivers can put forward their opinions and suggest solutions. However, the group does not want to create panic fuel-buying.

Statistics from the group starkly illustrate the problems faced by hauliers and couriers in the UK when it comes to fuel costs.

The price of crude extraction, refining the fuel, and transporting it to pumps costs as little as 17 pence per litre, yet operators are then hit with between 70 and 75 pence per litre in UK taxation.

From October, fuel duty will be increased further, and then again next year.

"Why is the UK's road haulage industry paying 25 pence per litre more for fuel than its continental counterpart?" the group asks.

"Why is HM Treasury taxing the UK road haulage industry to the point of extinction?"

The group is calling on drivers to join the protest against high taxation.
