A report into carbon emissions from the transport sector by the Commission for Integrated Transport (CfIT) highlights the fact that the logistics sector has made progress in reducing CO2 emissions.

As the Freight Transport Association (FTA) notes, courier companies and freight haulage firms have employed various measures in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as improving operational efficiency, and more widely adopting the use of biofuels.

Now the group has welcomed the CfIT report, which recognises that progress has been made in this area and that further potential opportunities exist. It also rejects a return to the Fuel Duty Escalator system, a position the FTA supports.

"The report's conclusion that the route to carbon savings is not through higher fuel duty is particularly welcome," said the FTA's James Hookham.

"FTA has long argued that escalating fuel duty robs smaller businesses of much needed cash to invest in efficiency measures. The commission's recognition of this simple truth goes a long way to helping achieve the efficiency savings that the report identifies."

Meanwhile, the Road Haulage Association has urged the government to waive fuel tax increases for freight transport operators, particularly in light of the advantage gained by foreign vehicles that can refuel more cheaply on the continent.
