The recent wet weather over the summer months contributed to an increase in sales of commercial vehicles, such as those used by the courier industry.

According to automotive business intelligence firm Eurotaxglass's, more new and used commercial vehicles (CVs) were sold because of the lengthy periods of heavy rainfall.

"If any vehicle suffers damage following a flood it will be subject to an insurance claim and probably rapid replacement," said the company's George Alexander.

"Where roads and fields were flooded, some owners will have seriously considered acquiring a more rugged commercial vehicle to cope with such conditions. Here, we have already seen a market improvement for double-cabbed 4x4s following an earlier period of price instability."

However, he did stress that the improved sales activity was likely to be short-lived, because used prices "for nearly all popular commercial vehicles were already pushing hard on the ceiling imposed by discounted prices on new".

Within the used CV market, the converted Ford Fiesta van is the car-derived van in the greatest demand. Meanwhile, Vauxhall Astravans and Ford T200/T220 SWB Connects are performing well, with demand steady for the Citroen Dispatch, the Fiat Scudo and the Peugeot Expert.
