Courier driver loses licence after aggressive drivingPopular

Date: 21 August 2007

A courier van driver in Scotland has lost his licence because he drove aggressively behind a learner driver.

David Newlands was driving in such a way because he was on a tight schedule, but his actions left both the driving instructor and the student "shocked", ThisIsNorthScotland.co.uk reports.

Mr Newlands approached the learner car, which was clearly marked with L plates, in the village of Culloden and repeatedly drove up close and then backed off again.

The incident happened on March 12th this year, and yesterday (August 20th) the courier van driver had his licence revoked for six months by Inverness Sheriff Court. He was also fined £200.

Mr Newlands had pleaded guilty to driving carelessly and now faces the prospect of losing his job as a courier driver.

Fine yes points yes idiot yes but lose licence when its your lively hood is too harsh. It also means the tax pay gets fined as we will have to keep him if he loses his job.

Van Drivers have a bad enough reputation on the county roads as it is. So this is no exception. If he values his job professionally he should think twice about his conduct whilst driving. No Excuse. First class example of a typical dick. Hope all courier drivers out there should learn a lesson from this

The comment says the van driver drove up repeatedly. The instructor should be suspended too as he should have acted in a proffesional manor and seen the danger on the 1st approach.adviseing his pupil to pull to the left when safe to do so let the idiot passed. This would ensure safty to him self his pupil and any motorist approaching in the other direction.what ever happens further down the road is no concern of the learner.learning to drive is the easy bit.dealing with other road users in the skill of safe driving.yes the van driver was wrong but he had more experiance.and would proberbly not sit on a major aroad (60mph) at 40 mile per hour oblivious to any vehicel behind him.nor would he sit in the 2nd lane at 50mph of a 3 lane motorway.

Steve Websters comment is totaly wrong. It is not the responsibilty of the instructor or the pupil to pull over to let the idiot pass, they have as much right to be there as anyone else. It is the responsibility of the van driver pass when safe to do so. I am half way through training to become a driving instructor. I should know. I am sick and tired of idiots in vans, I no longer want to be tarred with the same brush!
