Possible TNT expansion could benefit courier sector
Date: 31 July 2007
The courier industry in the UK could be set for something of a shake-up as postal operator TNT decides whether or not to launch an end-to-end postal network.
TNT, a Dutch firm, currently operates under an access agreement with Royal Mail but is now deciding whether to create a national end-to-end network of its own.
The postal market in the UK will benefit from better competition from couriers and others once the virtual monopoly that Royal Mail represents is broken up.
"Only if competitors like ourselves have their own networks will we get real competition," TNT chief executive Peter Bakker told the Guardian.
"We expect a decision by TNT over the next 12 months on setting up this activity."
He added that it would not involve TNT setting up post boxes but would mainly be targeted at business customers sending out bulk mail.
"If TNT is going to set up an end-to-end network you will see people wearing orange uniforms delivering mail," Mr Bakker said.
Royal Mail is currently the subject of strike action by its staff, which has led to courier firms picking up dissatisfied customers.
