Second postal strike to hit on Friday

Date: 10 July 2007

The Communication Workers Union has announced another 24-hour postal strike, to begin at 7pm on Thursday, in a move that is likely to affect courier firms and owner drivers in the UK.

This will mean that no Royal Mail deliveries will be made on Friday (July 13th), leaving many businesses high and dry.

The strike centres around pay, with Royal Mail's chief executive Adam Crozier saying the company cannot afford a greater than 2.5 per cent pay rise.

It follows another day-long strike staged 11 days ago, which left homes and businesses without Royal Mail deliveries.

A spokesman for Royal Mail told the Eastern Daily Press: "Further strike action will achieve nothing. The union is saying nothing new and is simply ignoring the challenge confronting everyone in Royal Mail which is the absolute need to modernise - as all our major rivals have already done - to reduce our costs in order to ensure we can compete successfully."

An ongoing postal dispute is likely to bring benefits for courier companies offering an alternative to Royal Mail.
